When your home is being terrorized (and colonized) by skin-crawling bed bugs, you don’t want to mess around with their removal. In a survey given to American pest control workers about what was the most difficult home invader to manage, around 68% of respondents said bed bugs. The pesky pests can lay more than 200 eggs in a short period of time, spreading throughout your home at an alarming rate. With so many options to choose from regarding eradication of these tiny tormentors, here are a few reasons why bed bug heat treatment is the clear winner.
Chemical-free: Toxic cleaning supplies already make the inside of our homes 200% to 500% more polluted than the outdoor air; with chemical bed bug treatments being significantly stronger and more noxious than common household cleaners, it’s important to remember that you’re trying to harm the bugs, not yourself or your family. Heat treatments blast your house with heat, not fumes. As long as you remember to remove any items that may melt (which your bed bug exterminator can help with identifying), your house and its air will be no worse for wear.
Effective: Steam treatments are also chemical free, but are not nearly as effective at complete eradication. Although perfect for specific spots, like mattresses and corners, they can’t penetrate deep enough to guarantee an end to all bed bugs. Bed bug heat treatments, on the other hand, raise the temperature of your home to between 135 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit — since bed bugs die instantly at 122 degrees, you won’t have to worry about a single one surviving to live (and bite) another day.
Fast: While you will need to leave your home for six to eight hours, this is nothing compared to the other options, especially when considering their efficacy. Chemical treatments usually need to be administered two or three separate times to eliminate the intruders, and can take an exceptionally long time depending on the size of your home. Even worse, some of them may be missed during the application, leaving you stuck right back at the beginning. Bed bug heat treatments actually save you time and effort in the long run.
Now that you have all the information, you can make an educated decision when contacting your local pest control service to help you with your bed bug problem.
